WORKING ANIMALS (DRAFT ANIMALS / DRAUGHT ANIMALS / TRACTION ANIMALS)

We ought to have a page on on oxen, water buffalo, carriage horses, donkeys, yaks, etc - but we have very little information on the subject.  If anyone can supply this information, please write to:
info@aapn.org

Apparently China has the world's largest population of donkeys - an estimated 10 million.

Generally speaking, we have no quarrel with subsistence farmers who work hard and honestly to survive in poor agricultural land.  It is usual to find that they treat their animals as well as they do  themselves and their human families. Man and beast work together in the struggle to make a living.
The problems come with increasing prosperity. For example, the farmer who discovers that he can make more money by treating his animals badly. Then come factory methods of farming and transport and all the horrors of the modern situation.
